Review I [Las Fallas 2007, Festival of Fire]

[Location: Valencia, Spain] [Date: 17-20 March 2007]

This trip was started from Gabi since Julio had to go back to Valencia for his Master Thesis. Of course, it was really interesting because the time when we wanted to go was in the Las Fallas Festival, typical Spanish traditional and only can be seen in Valencia during that week in a year. For me, I could simply decide to join the trip without hesitation.

Our journey started from Offenburg on Saturday in the late morning. Fortunately, we didn't have to take a train from here to Frankfurt Hahn airport. One of us offered the idea to drive a car directly to the airport. This would mean we don't have to waste our time in catching a bus again, however, the price that we had to pay was fuel cost as well as the parking fee which costs 32 Euro for 4 nights!

After 3 hours on the road and 2 hours on the plane, finally, we arrived at the Valencia airport around 6.00 pm. There Julio was already waiting for our arrival. With his driving speed, it took us only 20 minutes to get to his home in Torrente, a city very close to Valencia. As we planned to stay in his house for the whole trip, we brought some souvenirs from Deutschland, China and of course, Thai Beer (Beer Chang), a key ring delicately made of wood from Thailand for him and his family.

Valencia is the third largest city in Spain, and has its own flag. It is slightly different from Spanish flag as can be compared in above pics, although the pic of Valencia flag is a bit too small to see ;p. Valencia flags with the horizontal blue stripe were hanged up all over the city to celebrate this fantastic Festival, Las Fallas 2007. Perhaps, in the next few years in Hatyai, we might have our own city flag but would belong to a new country, Pattanee Metropolitan T-T as the problem in southern Thailand remains unimproved.

So, after we took a rest for an hour, we went to Valencia by the subway or what they call here “Metro”. It was quite simple to buy a ticket, there are a plenty of ticket selling machines around the terminal. Just select what kind of ticket you want to buy and put the amount of money equal to the price showing on the screen. However, this would seem to be served only for local people because when I wanted to buy a ticket, it didn’t work for me! So, finally, not to waste time, Julio helped me buy the ticket from the counter (c’mon, I couldn’t speak Spanish!).

Here, there are currently 4 lines of Metro on service and the fifth line is still under construction. With this kind of public transportation, it could take us just in a few minutes to most parts of the city. Unfortunately, as it could be expected, the train was getting crowded with people, who want to see the Fallas (the monument made of a pile of paper) and the Fireworks tonight, when it passed through each stop at the train station. Finally, we arrived at Valencia station safely with all money in my pocket.

Since we arrived there too early, we had to wait until the time they started the firework which was 1:00 am. We decided to wait in one of Julio friends’ place for a while and then walked around the city to see some Fallas.

The Fallas have their origin in a ritual celebrating of spring. Local people willingly donate their money for creating this artwork. Some of them cost up to 500,000 Euro. They will be unveiled on the night of March 15th until 19th. Then all of them will be burnt down in the last night of the festival all over the city. The local people will be so proud if their fallas win the prize. The reason is the won Fallas will be burnt at last and its small copy will be kept in the museum. At this point, you might wonder why they have to burn them. Do they burn it for fun??? Yeah! Maybe, at least it would be the reason that why this festival is so famous (haha).
